What Commonly Breaks During a Move and How To Prevent It

If you are already building on a budget, moving will probably be done by you and a few of your friends.  Since you are probably not a professional mover, here are some tips to make sure things get there in one piece.  These tips can help you move in quickly, yet efficiently.

Glassware

Glass kitchenware is the first thing that may come to mind as easily breakable household items.  Not only is it a hassle to buy replacement glassware, but the broken pieces can be dangerous to clean up.  While glassware is one of the most obvious concerns when moving, there are other larger items that can cause you trouble while packing as well.

Electronics

Electronic devices, such as laptops and televisions, can be easily damaged during a move.  Fragile parts can cause your products not to work if they are banged around while the move takes place, even if they are never dropped on the ground.

Washer/Dryer

Another larger item that could be destroyed is those heavy duty washer and dryers, especially those that are front-end loading.  The spinning drum in those washers needs to be tightly secured during a move, or your clothes may never get cleaned by that machine again.

Solutions

Now that we know what items can break, what are some possible ways to prevent these incidents from ever occurring?  When it comes to the common glassware kitchen items, some sort of soft packaging is best.  This could be bubble wrap, a towel, newspaper, or even paper-shreddings.  Also, separated individual compartments for cups or plates work well.  The less banging together of glass, the better.  Also, make sure to label all boxes.  This will let the movers, or yourself, know what items are breakable and need to be handled with extra precaution.  Or if some items should only be held facing up labeling the direction is should face will help.  Finally, along with newspaper to separate glassware, put a layer on the bottom of the box, so the heavier items will not fall through.

Moving Large Items

When moving larger items try and keep the original packaging the items came in.  This will keep the items safe for your move.  Again, added soft packaging is always a plus.  When moving your washer/dryer, a manufacturer’s shipping kit is probably the best way to go.  This will hold the washer’s drum securely in place and lower the damage that could be done from the move.

These helpful tips will help you move to your dream home or apartment with fewer headaches.
