As you already know from our previous post, summer is just right around the corner and what better way to enjoy it than with a new deck. Just imagine what fun you can have with that new deck. Just like everything else that you build following certain steps or tips will help you out in the long run. Here are a few tips that we have come up with to help you build that deck.
Tip #1: Plan It
Make sure you know what type of deck you want and what you want to do with that deck. Do you want to use it for grilling, for sunbathing or for dinner parties? Whatever you plan to do with it plan carefully before you start this investment as not knowing what you want or just building it just to have one can get costly.
Tip #2: Understand It
You should understand the structure of the deck. Not just the surface that you will be standing on but also the layers that make it up to prevent any injuries while using the deck. Having a solid foundation can help support the deck and transfer weight evenly to the ground.
Tip #3: Materials
Once you plan it and understand it, using the right materials to build it will help keep the cost low and keep it durable. For the best results pressure-treated lumber is the way to go. It is a popular choice due to the low cost and that it can be stained to almost any color. Of course if you are planning on putting a hot tub or swimming pool out there, redwood, cedar, vinyl or composite decking can be used to prevent water damage.
Tip #4: Protect It
At the beginning of every season make sure you clean that deck to prevent it from wearing out. You can use any general-purpose deck cleaner to clean the deck but make sure that you let it stand on the deck for at least an hour to get the most effectiveness out of the cleaner. After an hour use a pressure washer to rinse the deck. Also make sure that you sweep the deck weekly to help keep it clean and prevent it from stocking up on pollen.
With these tips you are on your way to building that new deck that you always wanted but never knew how.
