Make Life Easier: Create a Cleaning Schedule (Part 2)

In Make Life Easier: Create a Cleaning Schedule (Part 1), we went over how to create a cleaning schedule for daily and weekly chores. This time, we will discuss monthly and seasonal schedules.

Monthly House Cleaning Duties

After you’ve tackled the daily and weekly cleaning lists, come up with one that you can do monthly. These are the tasks are ones that can afford to be neglected for a few weeks at a time. Some of them you can even get away with doing every other month, depending on your situation. Remember to tailor these lists to YOUR needs.

Examples of Monthly Duties:

  • Vacuum along edge of walls and corners of ceilings
  • Vacuum furniture (inside couch cushions)
  • Disinfect all the door knobs, light switches, appliance handles, etc.
  • Cycle clean dishwasher and washing machine
  • Sweep out/vacuum garage
  • Wash bath rugs
  • Dust ceiling fans
  • Clean out refrigerator and freezer

Keeping up with these chores on a monthly basis will ensure you have a clean, dust-free home. Pick a day during a weekend to tackle them or spread them throughout the month. Either way, be consistent. Consistency will develop into habits. Eventually, you’ll get to the point where this feels natural.

Seasonal House Cleaning Duties

Seasonal duties could possibly be the most important chores you need to do, but they are often forgotten. Seasonal duties should be split into two categories: cleaning and maintenance. Maintenance tasks are those that are essential for the home to literally run properly while cleaning are tasks that should be done on a semi-annual basis to keep the house clean.

Examples of Seasonal Maintenance Duties:

  • Replace furnace/AC unit filter
  • Clean gutters
  • Inspect fireplace and chimney
  • Check gas-powered outdoor equipment (lawn mower, snow blower, leaf blower, weed trimmer, etc.)

Examples of Seasonal Cleaning Duties:

  • Clean oven
  • Vacuum and flip mattresses
  • Sweep out fireplace
  • Wash windows
  • Wash window coverings
  • Clean clutter out of closets and storage
  • Clean outdoor living spaces (power wash patio/deck, clean grills and furniture, etc.)

Taking on the job of being a homeowner means way more than just making your mortgage payments every month. It is essential to keep your house clean and safe. By keeping up with these cleaning and maintenance tasks, your house will be running in excellent condition. Instead of being unaware of potential problems, you will be on top of them and they will be addressed almost immediately.
