How to Host Thanksgiving: Part 1 – Prep the House

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be a stressful situation. You have to deal with everything from cleaning the house to decorating to cooking dinner! Breaking down these tasks into two different parts will help lessen the stress of the actual day. Part 1 is prepare the house and Phase 2 is prepare the dinner. The easiest way to approach it is to tackle Part 1 a week before Thanksgiving. Here are 4 easy steps to preparing your house for Thanksgiving:

Step 1: Create a Budget
It’s easy to overspend during the holidays. Figuring out how much money you’re willing to spend on Thanksgiving will save you from suffering from buyer’s remorse. Create a budget for décor and a budget for food.

Step 2: Clean, Clean, Clean!
You always want to make a good impression for guests! Doing a deep cleaning of the house a week before the big day saves you from the “night before drama.” Scrub down all the bathrooms (yes, all of them), vacuum all the carpets and furniture (especially if you have pets), and dust all surfaces. Set the oven for a self-cleaning cycle while you tackle the rest of the kitchen. Be sure to clean out the refrigerator, freezer and pantry, and also take stock of other items such as tissues and toilet paper. This way, you’ll know exactly what you have to buy during Part 2. Now, all you’ll have to do Thanksgiving morning is do a quick wipe down and you’re done.

>Step 3: Get Organized and Shop
Now that the house is cleaned and clutter is gone, you should know what you have to buy. Be sure to make sure you have enough dinnerware and silverware. When you head to the store, don’t buy food yet. Look for some fall décor and if there are going to be little kiddos running around, it’s a good idea to pick up some crayons and a coloring book.

Step 4: Decorate and Plan
Once you have all the items bought, you can go home and start decorating and creating a plan for where food and drinks will go. Mixing browns, yellows, reds and oranges will give the house a very warm, autumn feel. Brown and red table clothes, small pumpkins and gourds, fall-colored faux leaves, and a spiced pumpkin candle is all you need. After you have the house decorated, you’ll want to start planning how you’ll serve the food. Is it going to be buffet style or family style? Designate a specific area for desserts and another for drinks.

Once you have the house prepared, you can take a break for a couple days. Then it’s time to start Part 2…
