Grilling Tips and Tricks

Now that summer is officially here its time to get out on your patio and start grilling! Below are some tips and tricks to making delicious food on your grill this summer:
1. Have the right equipment
Although grilling is a pretty basic form of cooking, all you need is a fire and food, there is some equipment that might make grilling easier and more enjoyable.
- Gas or charcoal grill – many people debate which type of grill is better and each has their advantages. In the end the decision of what type of grill to use is up to you!
- Tongs – these are used for picking up, turning, and moving your food on the grill to make sure it cooks evenly. A good pair of tongs can save your hands from burning and your food where it should be.
- Brushes – these are used for putting sauces onto your food. You could use a spoon or another tool, but brushes really get the job done easily and efficiently.
- Work space – most grills don’t have enough room for workspace. A great idea to create more space is to set up a small table next to your grill to put all your ingredients on.
- Recipes – while recipes are a great starting point, don’t think you need to follow them exactly, feel free to change things up and experiment with your food. Grilling is not an exact science and can be more fun if you mix things up every once in a while!
2. Don’t move your food the minute you put it on the heat
Many people tend to move their food just minutes after they put it on the grill. Put the food down to give it a chance to cook, if you keep moving it around it will not have a chance to cook and will take longer to be ready.
3. Know when your food is done
When grilling, it is important to master getting the food off of the grill at the right time. It can take a little practice, but as you’re learning remember this simple rule: when in doubt, it is better to undercook than overcook. You can always put the food back on the grill to keep cooking, but you can’t undo overcooked food.
4. Let meat and poultry rest when you are done grilling it
It is important to let your food rest for at least five minutes when you are done cooking it. This lets the juices thicken up a bit so when you cut into your meat they don’t run all over your plate, but instead stay in your food making it taste better. Fish, on the other hand, does not need to rest and should be served immediately because it loses heat quickly.
