While our homes are modern and energy-efficient, there are some individuals that go to the extreme when it comes to ‘going green’. Check out these low-impact woodland homes that people have created:

This home looks like Bilbo Baggins’ home straight out of the Lord of the Rings! This home was built in Wales and took about 1000-1500 hours to complete. The home cost only $4,700 to build! The man who built this home is not a professional builder or even a carpenter, but was able to construct this in a reasonable amount of time!

This home was actually dug into a hillside so that it would be sheltered from bad weather and would have a minimal impact on the surrounding environment. To accentuate the ‘green’ factors, the house was built out of lime plaster instead of cement. Even the fridge is not using electricity- it is fueled by the cool air coming from underground through the foundation.

The man who built this home lives here with his wife and two small children. They try to focus their time and resources on conserving nature rather than destroying it. Since they have no mortgage payment to worry about, the two are full-time parents while their children are young.

The organization that built this home tries to minimize our ecological footprint on the Earth by using natural building materials, by composting and recycling, by using solar power for lighting. Soon they hope to generate water power. This home took about 3 years to build.

These homes are mostly based in the United Kingdom, and cost under $7,000 to build. The organizations that build these homes want to provide minimal impact on the environment. The owners of these homes are trying to become self-sufficient. They go to far lengths to provide everyday needs for themselves rather than depending on society. They have their own gardens, fresh water sources, and minimal to no electricity use.
