Household injuries are one of the top reasons kids under 3 years old visit the ER.  Try viewing your home from a baby’s perspective and think about what home features could cause harm.  Here are some tips for how to make common hazardous household areas safer for children:

The Kitchen

You need all sorts of sharp objects such as knives and scissors in the kitchen, so try to put those items out of a child’s reach.  Store them on the back of the countertops so they are unreachable from a child’s ground or chair level.

Having some kind of fastener on your cabinets, stoves and refrigerators is a good way to keep your child away from things you don’t want them to have. These are often very inexpensive and easy to install.

Bathrooms

When dealing with bathrooms, wet floors can be dangerous at any age.  Making sure you dry your floors completely after showering can help prevent slipping and falling.  No slip mats in showers and bathtubs are great ways to keep traction while moving around and getting out.

Having overhead shelves to keep razors and other bathing products out of reach from children is also very important.

Lastly keep your toilet seat down; you don’t want your children clogging your toilet with their favorite action figure.

Other Areas

Stairs are always a big concern when dealing with babies. Installing gates to keep them from going up and down stairs alone is a very good investment.

Also check if you have any sharp corners on tables or cabinets. Table edge and corner guards can be attached to these corners keeping your child’s head safe if they bump into them.

Electric sockets should be covered by socket protectors or outlet safety covers to avoid your child from putting their finger or toys inside.
