Great rooms are one of the rooms in the house where homeowners as well as guests spend the most time. It is a place where we get the most comfortable, curl up on the couch, read a book or watch TV or cozy up by the fireplace. Great rooms can have different set-ups, features, furniture and decor to make them stand out. In one of our Twitter polls, we asked our followers if they could make one room in their home larger which room would they choose and over 50{447216cae66a4d332ab0ac71eb11e27716218036a4f422ac40162b059a195e14} of voters chose the great room!

Fireplaces

Fireplaces come in all shapes and sizes. Some are built-in to the wall, others are short and some are even floor to ceiling. They can be made from realstone panels, cultured stone, tile or brick. Some fireplaces stand alone while others have built-ins surrounding them. Many fireplaces have a mantel on top of them or even a painted wood surround. A fireplace is often the focal point in a great room and the room is usually built around this feature.

Built-Ins

Built-ins are a great addition to the great room for extra storage space and to display decorations. Built-ins can go around the fireplace or can be a separate unit entirely. Some of these built-in cabinets are on both sides of the fireplace and continue to cover most of the wall, while others are small cabinets that are just on the side of the fireplace. There are cabinets as well as shelves and drawers that can occupy space in these built-ins. Two of these images are shelving units that act as a half-wall hiding the basement stairs.

Ceiling Height

Ceiling height in the great room is a topic always up for debate. Having varying ceiling heights on the main level can give your home more dimensions and also give it a larger feel. Some of our plans have the same ceiling height on the entire first level. Other plans like the Brookridge have 11′ ceilings, making the great room the tallest room in the home. The Ridgewood plan has the tallest ceiling yet with a catwalk overlooking the great room to really see the height of this magnificent plan.

Great rooms can have many different features and designs. They can be redecorated over and over again to fit the latest home trends.
