10 Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Holiday Guests

December 7, 2011

Cypress Homes knows the holidays bring many events to look forward to: the first snow, shopping for presents, Christmas music, giving your home a festive feel, and of course the task of preparing your home for guests. Okay, that last one is one of the drags during the holiday season; however here are a few simple tips to help you get ready for all your crazy relatives!

  1. Still have a pumpkin sitting on your porch? Update your decorations so that instead of orange and black, your guests see red and green!
  2. Clean your front porch. Purchase a new mat if your current one is old and faded. Get rid of all the dust and cobwebs that have accumulated throughout the past couple months.
  3. Check over the entryway in your home. The entryway is the first section of the home your guests will see, make sure that everything is dusted and there is a clean space available for their coats. Purchase hooks or a few extra hangers to place the coats so they aren’t draped over a piece of furniture.

4. Clean your refrigerator and pantries! Get rid of any old food or items from last year’s gift baskets that you’re probably never going to eat. Holiday dinners will stock your fridge with leftovers, so opening as much space as possible is highly recommended!

5. Stock up on soda, water, juice, wine, and beer! Group gatherings will put a huge dent in your beverage stock, so try to get as much as possible so everyone is happy with the selection.

6. Think about sleeping arrangements before guests arrive. It is very important t hat guests feel comfortable in your home, so make sure that they have a comfortable sleeping area. If you do not have enough beds available make arrangements to borrow a cot or inflatable mattress from someone.

7. Provide miscellaneous items your guests may have not thought of or forgot at home. Provide an alarm clock that is easy to use. Also your guest may have forgotten shampoo, conditioner, or soap so have some extra bottles on hand, just in case.

8. Create closet space. Your guests are probably going to over pack and will definitely need a lot of room to keep their things, even if it is only a two day visit.

9. Provide extra towels. You don’t want to be doing laundry every day, so if you don’t have enough towels, buy some, it’s much more convenient than wasting time doing laundry.

10. Set out a bowl of potpourri or spray the room with a festive scent. Guest’s rooms aren’t used that often, so make sure it does not smell musty.
